Annual Fund Drive

The Annual Fund is an organized effort to obtain gifts on a yearly basis to support, at least in part, general operations of a nonprofit organization such as CIS. Annual gifts are usually unrestricted income. Funds are typically raised through mail or direct solicitation efforts.

At Carolina International School we depend to a small degree (roughly 3% of our overall operating budget) on Annual Fund contributions to 'make ends meet'. Without such contributions we would have to make some cuts in our operating expenses that we prefer not to make. Total annual ontributions in excess of 3% of our operating budget allow us to do even more than we had planned for relative to the education of our students.

The reason, more than anything else, that our normal revenue does not fully cover all our expenses is that charter schools are underfunded relative to regular public schools. This is true in two ways:

  1. Today, public charter school students do not receive a full share of local funds. Based on data collected from the N.C. Treasurer’s Office and the N.C. Department of Public Instruction, on average, children attending public charter schools receive only 73% of the local funds a traditional school student receives (Districts are allowed to keep the rest).  Check this out also to see what charter funding is missing in the counties our students at CIS come from.

  2. More significantly, we do not receive any tax dollars for the designated purpose of purchasing our property and building our buildings. Consequently, we carry a mortgage, and a significant one, to cover the costs of such. If we did not have such mortgage payments to make, an Annual Fund Drive would not be necessary to cover any shortfall in our annual budget; though we might still conduct such a drive, it's purpose would rather be for enhancements of the educational program.

We also use the overall percent of parent and employee contributions in solicitations we make of outside contributors. These potential outside contributors are more likely to be willing to contribute to our school if we can show a high percentage of participatory contributions by our parents and employees. Thus, it's just as important to make a contribution per se as it is to give according to one's means. PLEASE CONTRIBUTE, and you may use the 'Support Us' button here to do so if you wish.

Please note that we are a 501c3 non-profit organization and thus all donations are tex deductible. Also, ask your employer if matching contributions are offered for a non-profit organization such as ours; many employers do so.
