We follow the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCS), which was recently revised and built around the Common Core Framework.

The sidebar provides the structure for the concepts and skills students will focus on in each subject area at each grade level.

Teachers incorporate multiple best-practice strategies to apply the standards. Differentiation steeped in reading, writing and discussion provides our instructional focus. appropriate, sequential instruction along with other curriculum innovations that allow for integrated and individualized instruction.

The CIS curriculum includes the study of the arts, English/language arts, computer technology, healthful living/physical education, mathematics, science, social studies, Spanish, and Chinese. Reading, Writing, and Math Labs devote special attention to these fundamental skills.

International perspectives and environmental awareness are brought to each of these subject areas to help foster understanding among young people around the world and stewardship of our natural resources, enabling future generations to live more peacefully and productively.

The 21st century is an age of technological innovation which results in schools addressing technology in the context of global markets. CIS conducts teleconferencing for educational and social connection and program partnerships. Classroom instruction has state of the art SMART boards and Mimio interactive technology where instructional connections takes place in all subject areas.

CIS is a 1:1 laptop school. Every student in grades 3-12 has a laptop computer. We have a well equipped computer lab. Our programs center on simple to complex applications and include Microsoft Office, Orchard for Remediation in Math, Reading and Science for Grades K-8, Journey's and Holt McDougal online reading programs, Measuring Academic Progress (MAP). In addition our Kidspiration and Inspiration programs develop thinking, literacy, numeric skills that enable students easily create and update graphic organizers, concept maps, a number of other skills.

 

 

CIS is collaborating with the Charlotte and Concord Sister City Programs to align each of our grades with one of these international cities—for the duration of the students’ years at CIS. This will enable our students to develop sustained relationships with their peers in other countries through pen pal and Internet correspondence and through visiting delegations from these countries.
